理科を学習するためには、読書が欠かせないという考えは、カンボジアで教育援助を行ったときに、強く感じるようになった。それまでも読書と理科という一見かけ離れたような関係に強い結びつきを漠然と感じていたのだが、カンボジアという特殊な状況に出会ったときに、一層強くなった。カンボジアは、内戦により、教育が長い間行われなかった。行われなかっただけではなく、書籍の多くが焼かれ、図書館が廃棄された。しかも教育者の多くが殺害された。そのような状況が20年近く続いたあとに政情が落ち着き、教育が再開したが、その傷跡は大きかった。
また、他の開発途上国の状況を聞いてみると、幾つか共通することが浮かび上がってきた。それは、母国語に抽象概念があまり存在しない、口伝えの暗誦の教育が伝統的に行われてきた、ということである。母国語ではなく英語を公用語として教育する場合は、翻訳の問題はあまり顕在化しない。しかし、母国語で教育する場合、特に理科の場合、専門用語の翻訳がかなり問題となる。日本では、明治時代に、先人達が造語も含めて翻訳を適切に行ってくれたため、日本では、翻訳の問題はそれほど大きくなっていない。現在、国を建て直そうとする開発途上国では、理数科の教育を必要としているが、理科の教育では、専門用語の翻訳が問題なのである。専門用語は、日常語とは違う。かなり抽象的な概念である。だから、相当その分野の概念を理解していないと翻訳できないのである。
さらに、概念を理解するには、一つの流れをつかまないといけない。この根本は、物語である。しかも、かなり複雑で長い長い物語である。一つの概念は、それだけでは、存在することはできず、他の概念と複雑な結びつきがある。それは、あたかも主人公を中心として脇役がたくさんいる長い物語と同じようなものである。時間の流れ、空間の把握も必要である。これは、もちろん抽象概念と密接に結びついていると私は思っている。だから、読書によって、複雑な人間関係、時間の流れ、空間の流れを把握しつつ、主題をつかむ訓練をすることが理科を学習する際にとても大切なことであると思うのである。こういった訓練をしないで大人になり、理科を学習しようと思ってもなかなか前に進まない。その素地がないからである。その状況がカンボジアをはじめとした開発途上国の大人達であると判断している。
読書の目的は、昔は、情報収集であったかもしれない。今は、インターネットをはじめとして多くの情報を得ることができる。もう本は、必要とされないと思うかもしれない。しかし、それは、思い違いである。ある概念を把握しようとするときには、その概念を様々な例をあげながら解説した本を読むことが必要である。それも少なくとも３冊は読むことが大事である。説明の多様性、内容の重なりを感じることにより、概念に少しずつ迫ることができるのである。だから、実物を扱う理科においても、目的とする抽象概念を把握するには、じっくり本を読むことが重要なのである。
“The relationship between reading and science learning”
In order to study science, the students need to read some books. I had this idea when I taught the teachers in Cambodia to improve teaching ability of teachers. The education system was destroyed by civil war for a long time. Most of library was destroyed and many books were burned. Moreover 90 % of educators were killed. There has never been national education system for about 20 years. This is a big damage for education.
In addition to this situation, there are some common problems among developing countries. There is no abstract concept in mother tongue and main learning method is recitation without reading books as the tradition.In the case that the official language is not English in developing country, the translation is big problem. Especially in science it is very difficult to translate the technical terms from English to mother language.
In Japan, predecessors translated the technical terms appropriately in Meiji era about 140 years ago. Thanks to them, we Japanese could study a lot of things written in foreign languages. However, it is difficult to study science because of problem of translation in developing countries, though it needs to study and mathematics science in developing countries. The technical terms are very different from the daily terms. In order to translate the technical term, someone must understand the concept deeply.
One concept in science resembles to the one long story. There is hero or heroine and supporting players in some story. And there is complicated relationship among characters. In order to the theme of the story, we must understand not only characters but also time and space. Similarly, in order to understand some concept in science, we must understand the relationship among the concepts and we must understand time and space. I think that we need practice to understand the theme by reading books to understand concepts in science. In the case that some adults grow without reading books, it is very difficult to understand abstract concept in science. They have never read any books. Therefore they cannot acquire the concept in science.
In the past days, reading books is necessary to get some information. However in the present days, there is a lot of information around us. You think that reading books are not necessary now. It is wrong. In order to understand one concept, we must read 3 books that are related to the same concept at least. Though one explanation of one concept cannot let someone persuade, the other explanation of one concept can let someone persuade. Moreover when we read some books that are related to the same concept, we can find the common contents among books. This is also an important point. In this way, reading books is very important in science that the real thing is object.
